May Salon: EWF Opening Night Extravaganza Edition

EWF post image

This month, the Salon will be a bit different. Why? It’s Emerging Writers’ Festival season!

In an excellent coincidence, the May Salon is on the same night as EWF’s Opening Night Extravaganza. And it’s going to be at the Deakin Edge — literally next door to our meeting place of Beer Deluxe.

Here’s the plan: we’ll meet up at our usual spot at Beer Deluxe, at our usual starting time of 6pm, have a drink and quick catch‑up, before wandering the 50 metres or so to EWF’s schmancy event.

The festival launch will:

celebrate incredible writing talent, with the announcement of the recipient of the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript, as well as the Monash Prize for Undergraduate Creative Writing winners. We’ll hear from international guest, writer Emily St. John Mandel, as well as getting the scoop on what to expect this festival.

It’s free, but you should book. The rest of EWF’s program is here, all filterable and searchable, just the way we like it.

And for those who like to stay up late (and catch writers, editors and festival staff when they’re chilled out and imbibing), there’s also a noir-themed After Party at the Kelvin Club just around the corner on Russell Street.

July Salon :: Final Salon at LOOP

ImageJoin us tomorrow night for the next regular Salon – a night of talking and sharing ideas with fellow literary folk.

After 18 months at LOOP, we’re sad to be saying farewell to our first home, a bar and project space that has treated us so well, but it’s for a good cause.

We’re teaming up with Melbourne Writers Festival in August, and returning to our former Last Tuesday time slot. On Tuesday 26 August the Melbourne Literary Salon will take up residence at the #mwf14 Festival Hub in Fed Square – and we’ll be sticking with the location and regular Last Tuesday vibe after the Fest. More details next month – or in person at the July Salon tomorrow night.

We look forward to seeing you at LOOP on Tuesday evening from 6pm onwards.

June Salon :: Special :: Emerging Writers’ Festival

Emerging Writing FTWMelbourne’s literary world is all about the top notch Emerging Writers’ Festival this month. We’re loving all the texty dorks and writerly types around town, so we made a special plan.

We’re consolidating the evening’s fine literary offerings and cheekily taking up residence at the Festival Hub for the evening. To share the Melbourne Literary Salon and #ewf14 love, head along to Thousand Pound Bend from 6pm, for a relaxed evening of literary networking.
Come share your stories!

Let’s connect with each other, fellow creators of stories! Whether you use words, pictures, digital technology or voice, whether you are just starting out or working full-time in the world of words, you’ll meet like-minded people, exchange news about what you’re working on and find out what’s going on across Melbourne’s literary sphere.

Got any new projects you’d like to share? Drop us a line and we’ll include it on the 60-second round-up of the month’s news, ideas and literary projects.

Special June Venue

The Emerging Writers’ Festival

Running from 27 May to 6 June in Melbourne, with pop-up events throughout the year in other parts of Australia, the Emerging Writers’ Festival is all about supporting emerging writers. The Fest truly is a place where creativity and innovation are celebrated, where new talent is nurtured and where diverse voices from across Australia are represented. More info >

May Salon :: Privacy

Privacy please

Privacy is a big issue for all of us, and yet it’s almost invisible.

It touches our lives every day: when we share documents and images via services like Dropbox or Google Drive, use a bank card, rewards card, fuel card, buy something that requires a barcode to be scanned, borrow things from the library, email anyone, text or call anyone on a mobile phone, every time we use social media, or go online to do anything from read the news to checking your bank balance.

This month at the Salon, we’ll be talking about the implications of privacy issues to writers, librarians, publishers, and the rest of us.

Come along for a drink, a chat, to catch up with friends, and meet some new literary folk.

From 6pm Tuesday 6 May at Loop Project Space and Bar, Meyers Place in Melbourne’s CBD.

April Salon :: Comedy

girl laugh

In honour of Comedy Fest, the theme of the April event, which is next week is Comedy.

In a glorious coincidence, the first Tuesday of the month is April Fools’ Day — perfect!

We would love to see you and all you comedy writing friends there. Usual details:

  • 6pm Tuesday 1 April
  • Loop Bar, Meyers Place, Melbourne CBD
If you’re on Facebook, RSVP to the event so we know you’re coming.
